by Lady Isabel Burton
Born Isabel Arundell in London on March 20, 1831, Lady Isabel Burton came from an old English Catholic family. She became known as a writer, explorer, and traveler, and her life was closely tied to that of Sir Richard Francis Burton, whom she married in 1861 after a long courtship.
She accompanied her husband on parts of his diplomatic and traveling life and built a reputation as a capable, adventurous figure in her own right. After his death in 1890, she worked hard to preserve and shape his public memory, editing and promoting his work while also writing about their shared life and travels.
Lady Isabel Burton died on March 22, 1896. She remains an interesting figure not only as Richard Burton's wife, but as a determined Victorian author whose faith, loyalty, and taste for adventure gave her a distinctive place in literary and travel history.
