About the author

Born in 1826, Lady Dorothy Nevill was the daughter of Horatio Walpole, 3rd Earl of Orford. She grew up between Norfolk and London, learned several European languages, and traveled widely before marrying Reginald Henry Nevill in 1847.

She became a well-known figure in late Victorian society, hosting a salon that drew politicians, writers, artists, and journalists. Admirers remembered her for her wit, strong opinions, and wide circle of acquaintances, which included major public figures of her day.

Later in life, she wrote memoirs and books drawn from those experiences, along with works reflecting her deep interest in plants and gardens. Her writing is valued not just for its gossip and color, but for the vivid window it opens onto social and political life in nineteenth-century Britain.
