About the author

Born Sophie Rostopchine in Saint Petersburg in 1799, the Comtesse de Ségur later settled in France and became one of the most beloved writers in French children's literature. She began publishing relatively late, drawing on stories told to her grandchildren and on her keen eye for family life, childhood mistakes, and everyday lessons.

Her best-known books include Les Malheurs de Sophie, Les Petites Filles modèles, and Les Vacances, works that helped make her a lasting presence in the French-speaking world. Published by Hachette in the Bibliothèque rose illustrée, her novels were widely read in the 19th century and have remained in print through adaptations, school reading, and family libraries.

What still makes her appealing is the energy of her storytelling: children in her books are curious, stubborn, funny, and deeply human. Even when her stories carry clear moral ideas, they are full of movement and personality, which helps explain why her work has endured well beyond its own time.
