About the author

Born in 1879 and died in 1968, Joseph Roserot de Melin was a French priest and historian whose work centered on the history of the Catholic Church in France. Bibliographic records identify him as an archivist-paleographer and Doctor of Letters, and note that he was a member of the École française de Rome from 1919 to 1921.

His published work includes studies on relations between the Holy See and the French church in the sixteenth century, along with articles on religious history that appeared over several decades. He is also associated with Troyes and the Aube region, which helps place his scholarly interests in the wider historical life of northeastern France.

Roserot de Melin is remembered not only as a scholar but also as a witness to war. A later source on testimonies from 1914–1918 describes his diary of daily life with territorial soldiers on the Vosges front, giving his legacy a more personal side alongside his academic writing.
