About the author

Born in Clifton, Prince Edward Island, in 1874, Lucy Maud Montgomery grew up largely on the island that would inspire much of her fiction. She trained as a teacher, wrote steadily from a young age, and built a wide readership through stories, poems, journals, and novels.

Her breakout book, Anne of Green Gables (1908), became an international success and was followed by many more books, including several sequels and other novels for young readers and adults. Montgomery’s work is closely tied to Prince Edward Island, and her writing helped shape the way generations of readers imagined the place.

She spent much of her later life in Ontario and continued writing while managing family and public demands. Today she is remembered as one of Canada’s most widely read authors, with a lasting influence on children’s literature and on readers who still find warmth, wit, and resilience in her books.
