About the author

Born in Zeitz on March 23, 1869, Kurt Ehrenreich Floericke studied natural sciences in Breslau and Marburg and earned a doctorate in 1893 with a thesis on the birdlife of Silesia. He went on to become known as a zoologist, nature writer, and author of numerous popular science books.

Floericke wrote for general readers rather than specialists, with books and articles that introduced animals, birds, insects, and the wider natural world in an inviting way. From 1907, he also edited the magazine Kosmos in Stuttgart, helping shape how nature and science were presented to the public.

He is remembered not only for writing but also for his conservation interests. An early advocate of bird protection, he supported the idea of establishing a bird sanctuary on Lake Constance. Floericke died in Stuttgart on October 29, 1934.
