About the author

Born in Trondheim on March 17, 1881, Kristian Elster was a Norwegian novelist, literary historian, theatre critic, biographer, and trained jurist. He was the son of writer Kristian Elster, and he later became known as one of the notable literary voices of his generation.

He made his literary debut with the story collection Fortællinger in 1907, and his breakthrough came with the novel trilogy I lære, Landeveien, and Mester, published from 1911 to 1913. Alongside fiction, he wrote essays, reviews, and literary criticism, and he became especially valued for the two-volume Illustrert norsk litteraturhistorie, often described as his most important work as a critic.

Elster also worked as a theatre reviewer and literary critic, and his writing often drew on Norwegian social life and the world of public officials. He died in Oslo on November 6, 1947, leaving behind a body of work that connected creative writing with clear, thoughtful literary commentary.
