About the author

Born on March 16, 1865, in Kirkkonummi, Knut Leonard Tallqvist was a Finnish scholar of Semitic cultures who became especially known for Assyriology, the study of ancient Mesopotamia. He studied oriental literature and Assyriology, traveled for research in Europe and the eastern Mediterranean, and went on to teach at the University of Helsinki, where he later served as professor of Oriental languages.

Tallqvist is remembered as one of the key figures in establishing the Finnish tradition of Assyriology. Biographical sources describe him as an internationally recognized authority in the field, and his research ranged across Babylonian names, hymns, prayers, magic, and literature. He also introduced broader audiences to Near Eastern subjects through accessible writing and translation work.

Among the works associated with him are studies of Assyrian and Babylonian texts and a Swedish rendering of the Epic of Gilgamesh. He died on August 16, 1949, leaving behind a scholarly legacy that connected Finnish research with the wider international study of the ancient Near East.
