About the author
Born in Porvoo on November 10, 1888, Klaus Uuno Suomela was a Finnish writer, educator, and artistic gymnast. Before focusing on literary and academic work, he was part of the Finnish gymnastics team that won a silver medal at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm.
Suomela went on to build a long teaching career at the University of Helsinki. Sources describe him as working first in physical education and later in dramatic arts and acting, which helps explain the strong theatrical side of his writing.
As an author, he is remembered especially for the script that became the popular 1942 film Hopeakihlajaiset ("Silver Engagement"), a story he later reworked into a novel. He died in Helsinki on April 4, 1962, leaving behind a career that bridged sport, teaching, theatre, and fiction.
