About the author

Born Princess Marie of Edinburgh in 1875, she was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria and married Ferdinand, the future King Ferdinand I of Romania. She became queen in 1914 and was widely admired for her energy, charisma, and public role during the First World War.

Beyond the court, she built a strong reputation as a writer. She published memoirs, fiction, children’s stories, and reflective prose, often drawing on royal life, travel, faith, and the emotional strains of history. Her books helped introduce international readers to Romania and to her own distinctive voice.

Marie died in 1938, but she remains one of Romania’s best-known queens and one of its most memorable royal authors. Her life combined royalty, politics, and literature in a way that still feels unusually vivid today.
