About the author

Born Princess Marie of Edinburgh in 1875, she was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria and a member of both the British and Russian imperial worlds before marrying Ferdinand, heir to the Romanian throne, in 1893. She became queen consort in 1914 and grew into one of the most recognizable figures in Romanian public life.

During the First World War, Marie earned lasting admiration for visiting hospitals and supporting wounded soldiers, while also becoming an important symbol of national resilience. After the war, she was closely associated with Romania’s international cause and became famous beyond the country for her charm, confidence, and political instinct.

She was also a prolific writer, producing memoirs, reflections, and other books that still shape how readers remember her. Marie died in 1938, but she remains one of the best-known royal figures in Romanian history.
