About the author

Born in South Brookfield, New York, in 1864, he studied at the University of Minnesota and later taught there. He went on to serve as an assistant professor of history and political science at the University of California, building a career that joined scholarship with academic leadership.

He became the fifth president of the University of Arizona in the early 1900s, and later served for many years as dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois. Archival records for his papers trace this path through his student years, teaching career, Arizona presidency, and later work in Illinois.

As an author, he is remembered for historical and educational writing, including The Rise of American Nationality, 1811–1819 and The Scandinavian Element in the United States. He died in 1932, leaving behind both published history and a substantial record of service in American higher education.
