What began in Battle Creek as a cereal company built around corn flakes grew into one of the best-known names in packaged food. Its story is closely tied to founder W. K. Kellogg, whose breakfast inventions helped shape modern American eating habits.
Founded in 1906 as the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company, Kellogg Company was created by Will Keith Kellogg after work he had done with his brother John Harvey Kellogg at the Battle Creek Sanitarium. The business became famous for ready-to-eat cereals, especially Corn Flakes, and over time expanded into many other snack and convenience-food brands.
For decades, the company was headquartered in Battle Creek, Michigan, and became a major name in global food manufacturing. In 2023, Kellogg Company changed its corporate name to Kellanova after separating its North American cereal business into WK Kellogg Co, so older books and historical references may still use the original Kellogg Company name.
W. K. Kellogg remains the key figure behind the company’s founding story. Beyond building the cereal business, he was also known for philanthropy, including the creation of the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, which helped make his name last well beyond the breakfast aisle.
