Born in Dows, Iowa, on May 9, 1914, he served in the U.S. Navy and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1937. During World War II he commanded a destroyer in both the Atlantic and Pacific, and he later remained in the Naval Reserve until retirement.

He went on to become a popular American author of children's books, with his Henry Reed series earning a lasting place in middle-grade fiction. His first book was published in 1948, and his work is remembered for its humor, lively plotting, and believable young characters.

Alongside his children's novels, he also wrote murder mysteries for adults under the pseudonym Carlton Keith. He died on September 23, 1991, in Hopewell, New Jersey.
