A Dutch teacher turned beloved children's writer, she helped shape generations of holiday memories with warm stories and lyrics that became classic Sinterklaas songs. Her work brought everyday kindness and child-friendly imagination into books, magazines, and music.

by Henriette Dietz, Katharina Leopold
Katharina Leopold was born in Groningen on May 7, 1846, and died there on June 4, 1914. Dutch sources describe her as a teacher, children's author, and lyricist. Although her birth name appears as Katrina Leopold in official records, her published work used the name Katharina Leopold or sometimes Kath. Leopold.
She is best remembered for writing the words to the Sinterklaas songs "O, kom er eens kijken" and "Hij komt, hij komt, die lieve goede Sint", which helped give her a lasting place in Dutch children's culture. She also wrote children's books and stories, including works such as Zonnestralen in school en huis and Vertellingen voor jongens en meisjes.
Leopold's writing seems to have grown out of the classroom: simple, lively, and close to children's daily world. Even today, her name stays familiar not only through her books, but through songs that have continued to be sung long after her lifetime.
