Born in London in 1846, Kate Greenaway became one of the most admired illustrators of the Victorian era. She trained in art from a young age and developed a style that made her instantly recognizable: gentle scenes of children, gardens, and everyday play, often dressed in simple, old-fashioned clothes.
Her picture books and illustrated works won a wide audience in Britain and beyond, especially in the late 19th century. She is closely associated with beloved children's publishing, and her work on books such as Under the Window helped turn her into an international success.
Greenaway died in 1901, but her influence lasted well beyond her lifetime. The Kate Greenaway Medal, one of the UK's best-known awards for children's book illustration, was created in her memory and reflects the lasting impact of her art.
