About the author

Born in Magdeburg on April 24, 1796, he studied law at Halle before his life was interrupted by the Napoleonic Wars. He later worked as a Prussian official in Düsseldorf, where he also became deeply involved in theater as a writer, director, and organizer.

Although he wrote plays, novels, and poetry, he is especially remembered for fiction that pointed toward new directions in German literature. Die Epigonen is often noted as an early social novel, while Der Oberhof, part of Münchhausen, is known for its vivid and realistic portrayal of rural life.

He died in Düsseldorf on August 25, 1840. Even though some of his dramatic works faded from view, his place in literary history has lasted because of the way his writing bridged literary eras and captured the social world around him.
