About the author

Born in Frankfurt am Main on January 22, 1882, Karl Ettlinger was a German journalist and humorous writer. Reference sources identify him as Jewish, and several note the pen names he used, including Karlchen, Helios, and Bim.

He was especially active in Munich and Berlin, where he worked as a writer, editor, and performer. Accounts of his career describe him as a popular humorist whose work ranged from journalism and fiction to cabaret, with a style rooted in observation, satire, and everyday comedy.

His life ended under the shadow of Nazi persecution. The Leo Baeck Institute notes that while trying to escape Germany, he died in Berlin in 1939, at the Jewish Hospital.
