About the author
Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on September 4, 1891, Karl William Detzer began working as a newspaper reporter and photographer at age sixteen. During World War I, he served as a captain in the American Expeditionary Forces and worked with the Division of Criminal Investigation, experiences that later shaped his nonfiction and adventure writing.
After the war, Detzer moved to Chicago and briefly wrote advertising copy before becoming a full-time author. He wrote for pulp magazines, the Saturday Evening Post, the Chicago Tribune, and Reader’s Digest, and produced books including True Tales of the D. C. I., Pirate of the Pine Lands, and the memoir Myself When Young.
Detzer also wrote screenplays, radio scripts, and television episodes, including work associated with the films Car 99 and Crash Donovan. He died on April 28, 1987, at the age of 95.
