About the author

Karl Decker (1868–1941), who also wrote under the name Charles Duval, was an American journalist associated with William Randolph Hearst’s New York Journal. He reported from Cuba during the tense years before the Spanish-American War and wrote a series of articles about Spanish treatment of Cuban prisoners and civilians.

Decker gained lasting notoriety for helping Evangelina Cosio y Cisneros escape from a Spanish prison, an episode that became both a celebrated journalistic coup and a subject of later controversy. He also covered the funeral procession for sailors killed aboard the USS Maine, returned to Cuba to report on the aftermath of a severe storm, and later worked for the Saturday Evening Post, where he made claims about the theft of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.
