About the author

Born in 1847 in Kirberg, Germany, Karl Bücher studied history and classical philology before working as a journalist, including for the liberal Frankfurter Zeitung. He later moved into university teaching and became known as an economist interested in how economic life changes across different stages of society.

Bücher taught at several universities, including Dorpat, Basel, and Leipzig. He is especially associated with the historical approach to economics and with studies of labor, trade, and the development of national economies. His writing helped make economic history a more serious academic field.

He died in 1930, but his reputation has lasted because he asked broad, lively questions about how people work, exchange goods, and organize society. For readers today, he remains an important figure in the early effort to connect economics with history, culture, and everyday life.
