About the author

Born in Kirberg in 1847, Karl Bücher studied history and philology before moving into economics, public life, and journalism. He became a professor of economics at the University of Leipzig, where his work earned wide recognition and where he later served as rector.

Bücher is best known for his historical approach to economics. Rather than treating economic activity as something fixed, he traced how production, trade, and labor changed across different stages of society. His book Industrial Evolution helped make those ideas accessible beyond Germany and remains the work most often associated with his name.

He also played an important role in the early academic study of the press. In Leipzig, he founded an institute for newspaper studies in 1916, a step often seen as part of the beginnings of modern communication and journalism studies in Germany. He died in Leipzig in 1930, leaving a legacy that reaches across both economics and media scholarship.
