Kalidasa

Kalidasa was an ancient Indian poet and playwright writing in Sanskrit, and he is widely seen as one of the central figures of classical Indian literature. Much about his life remains uncertain, including the exact dates he lived, though he is commonly placed around the Gupta period.

He is best known for works such as Abhijnanashakuntalam (The Recognition of Shakuntala), Meghaduta (The Cloud Messenger), and Kumarasambhava. His writing is celebrated for its vivid images of the natural world, emotional clarity, and graceful language, qualities that helped his work travel far beyond its original time and place.

Because reliable historical details are scarce, Kalidasa is often known more through his writing than through biography. Even so, his influence has been enormous: his plays and poems remain widely read, translated, adapted, and admired as landmarks of Sanskrit literature.
