About the author

Born in Grou, Friesland, in 1789, Justus Hiddes Halbertsma became one of the key figures in the cultural revival of the Frisian language. He is best known for work connected with De Lapekoer fan Gabe Skroar, the influential collection created with his brothers that helped give West Frisian a durable place in modern literature.

Halbertsma's life was not limited to writing. He trained for the Mennonite ministry and served congregations in Bolsward and later Deventer, while also building a reputation as a scholar of language. His interests ranged from poetry and folklore to lexicography and linguistics, and he is remembered as one of the people who gave Frisian literary culture new confidence in the 1800s.

Because of that mix of warmth, scholarship, and regional pride, his legacy reaches both readers and language historians. He stands out not just as an author, but as a writer who helped preserve and shape a language's future.
