A prolific Irish writer, composer, and music historian, he devoted much of his life to exploring Ireland’s musical past. His books helped popularize Irish musical history, even as later scholars debated the accuracy of some of his claims.

Born in Lismore, County Waterford, William Henry Grattan Flood became known as an Irish author, composer, musicologist, and historian. He studied music and went on to work as an organist and teacher, with posts including cathedral work in places such as Thurles, Belfast, and Enniscorthy.
He wrote extensively on Irish music, musicians, and history, producing a large body of work that brought these subjects to a wide readership. His writing was influential in shaping popular interest in Irish musical heritage, and he also contributed as a composer of ecclesiastical music.
Later reference works note that, while he was energetic and important as a promoter of Irish music history, some of his scholarship has been viewed as unreliable or inaccurate in places. Even so, his work remains part of the story of how Irish music was collected, interpreted, and shared with modern readers.
