Born Julius Rappoport on March 21, 1891, he was a historian, poet, and translator who wrote under the name Julius West. Though his life was brief, he built a remarkably varied body of work and became known for combining literary interests with political and historical subjects.

He prepared a Fabian tract on John Stuart Mill, wrote a critical study of G. K. Chesterton, and translated works by Anton Chekhov into English. He also wrote A History of the Chartist Movement, which was published after his death and remains one of the works most closely associated with his name.

West was in Russia during the upheaval of 1917 and witnessed the revolution firsthand, an experience that shaped his view of the period. He died in 1918, leaving behind the sense of a gifted writer and scholar whose career had only just begun.
