About the author

Born in Brandenburg an der Havel on August 24, 1768, Julius von Voss — also written Julius von Voß — was a German writer who first pursued a military career. He served in the Prussian army before turning more fully to literature, and he later lived and worked in Berlin.

He became known for an unusually large and varied output, writing novels, comedies, farces, and satirical pieces for a broad reading public. Reference sources consistently describe him as a highly prolific popular author, and later literary histories also note his place in the long prehistory of science fiction.

Voss died in Berlin on November 1, 1832. While he is not as widely read now as some of his contemporaries, his career offers a vivid glimpse of the lively, commercial literary culture of German-speaking Europe in the age of revolution and restoration.
