About the author

Born in Porto in 1856, Júlio Xavier de Matos became one of Portugal’s most important psychiatrists. He studied medicine in Porto and built his career at a time when psychiatry was becoming more organized as a medical field.

He is especially remembered for directing major psychiatric institutions, teaching psychiatry, and contributing to forensic and clinical psychiatric studies in Portugal. Sources about his life describe him as a central figure in the reform of psychiatric care, with work that stretched from the late 19th century into the early 20th.

He died in Lisbon in 1922, but his name remained closely linked with the history of Portuguese psychiatry and mental health reform.
