About the author

Born in Albany, New York, in 1873, Julia Augusta Schwartz studied at Vassar College, earning her bachelor's degree in 1896 and a master's degree in English literature the following year. Aside from a brief stint teaching at Omaha High School, she devoted her working life to writing.

Schwartz became known for books for girls and children, including school and nature-themed works written in a clear, readable style. Her books were often intended for young readers and sometimes for classroom use, showing a strong interest in education as well as storytelling.

She later lived in California and died in 1957. Her papers, covering much of her writing life, are preserved at Vassar College, where they offer a glimpse into an author whose career was closely tied to children's literature and learning.
