by Jules Archer
Born in New York City on January 27, 1915, Jules Archer became a prolific American author of nonfiction history, politics, and biography. He studied at DeWitt Clinton High School and the City College of New York, where he earned a degree in advertising.
During World War II, he served with the Army Air Corps in the Pacific. That background, along with later research and reporting, helped shape a writing career focused on real people, public events, and power in American life.
Archer wrote many books for general audiences and younger readers, often tackling subjects from U.S. history and political controversy. He died on November 13, 2008, and his papers, including manuscripts and research materials, show just how wide-ranging and hardworking a writer he was.
