1878–1919
Known as both a writer and a sharp-witted song poet, this Finnish public figure moved easily between literature, journalism, and politics in the turbulent years before independence. His work reflects a lively interest in society, belief, and public debate.
Born Juho (Jussi) Ernst Törnroos in Pornainen on August 29, 1878, he later became known as Juho Kujala. He was a Finnish journalist, writer, and kupletti poet, and he also served as a Social Democratic member of Parliament from 1914 to 1918.
Kujala is remembered not only for political work but also for his writing. He was associated with popular and public-facing forms of literature, and his name appears in library and public-domain records as the author of works including Piru: Historiallinen katsaus pirun alkuperään, elämään ja toimintaan.
He died in Helsinki on July 1, 1919, at just 40 years old. Though his life was short, he left behind a striking blend of literary, journalistic, and political activity that makes him an unusual and memorable figure in early 20th-century Finland.
