About the author

Born in 1842 in the Rauma countryside, he was a self-taught reader and writer who went on to train as a teacher and work for decades as a traveling school instructor in southwest Finland. He taught in places including Taivassalo, Loimaa, and Perniö, and retired in 1905.

He first published under the name Juho Hellman, then later used Juho Helomaa after the family surname changed. His writing included poems and recitation pieces connected with the temperance movement, as well as songs and verse for young people. Contemporary accounts also note that he performed his work aloud at temperance celebrations and sold printed poetry booklets during his travels.

In 1909 he published Muistelmia Rauman kaupungin muinaisista ja nykyisistä oloista, a book about the past and present of Rauma. That mix of teaching, public speaking, poetry, and local history gives his work a direct, community-minded character that still feels close to everyday life.
