About the author

Born as Topi (Tobias) Orpana in Käkisalmi in 1886, this Finnish writer used the pen name Juhani Suur-Juhola. He studied at the University of Helsinki and completed a degree in philosophy in 1910.

Alongside his literary work, he built his career in journalism. He worked for Suomalainen Kansa, later for Tampereen Sanomat, and then for Käkisalmen Sanomat, where he spent many years. He also worked for a time as a schoolteacher and later as a district secretary for the National Coalition Party while contributing to Karjalainen and other Karelian newspapers.

His best-known book under the name Juhani Suur-Juhola is the 1911 poetry collection Talven tullessa: runoja. Although only a small amount of his writing is widely remembered today, his work connects poetry, local journalism, and the cultural life of early 20th-century Finnish Karelia.
