About the author

Otto Juhani Sjöström was a Finnish writer, born on September 16, 1871, in Käkisalmi and died on October 23, 1909, in Sortavala. The sources I found describe him as a Finnish author best known for writing about Karelian folk life.

He is especially associated with the plays Mari, Irja, and Salmin tyttö, which are noted for their portrayal of Karelian everyday life. Sources also credit him with the fairy-tale play Päivän tyttö and the story collection Korpien povesta.

Although he is not widely known internationally today, Sjöström has a place in Finnish literary history as a writer who captured regional life and culture in an accessible way. I could not confirm a suitable portrait image from the pages available during this search, so none is included here.
