About the author

Born around 1580 or 1581 in Taxco, in New Spain (now Mexico), he later studied in Mexico and Spain before building his career in Madrid. Although he spent much of his adult life in Spain, he remains one of the most important literary figures born in colonial Mexico.

He is best known as a dramatist of the Spanish Golden Age. His plays often stand out for their tight construction and for the way they focus on character and ethical choice rather than spectacle alone. Among his best-known works is La verdad sospechosa, a comedy that became especially influential beyond Spain.

Ruiz de Alarcón died in 1639. Readers and theater lovers continue to return to his work for its intelligence, irony, and humane understanding of how pride and self-deception can shape a life.
