About the author

Born around 1581 in New Spain, probably in or near Taxco in present-day Mexico, he became one of the standout dramatists of the Spanish Golden Age. Britannica describes him as a Mexican-born Spanish playwright of the colonial era, and Wikipedia notes that he died in Madrid on August 4, 1639.

He studied law, spending time at the University of Salamanca, and later built his career in Spain. His plays are known for their careful construction, lively dialogue, and interest in character and ethics rather than sheer spectacle.

His best-known work is La verdad sospechosa, often regarded as his masterpiece. Though he wrote in the crowded theatrical world of Lope de Vega and Tirso de Molina, his reputation has endured because of the intelligence, restraint, and moral clarity of his drama.
