About the author

Born in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1885, Zechariah Chafee Jr. became one of the most influential American legal scholars of the twentieth century. He studied at Brown University and later at Harvard Law School, then joined the Harvard faculty, where he built a reputation for clear thinking, independence, and deep concern for civil liberties.

Chafee is best known for his powerful defense of free expression during and after World War I, when dissenting voices were often under attack. His 1920 book Freedom of Speech and the expanded Free Speech in the United States became landmark works, helping frame the modern understanding of First Amendment protections.

Beyond free speech, he also wrote important works on equity, judicial procedure, and unfair competition. He died in 1957, but his ideas continued to influence lawyers, judges, and readers interested in how democratic societies protect debate, disagreement, and individual rights.
