About the author

Born in Brundidge, Alabama, on November 30, 1890, he studied at Troy State Normal School, the University of Alabama, and Columbia University, where he earned a Ph.D. He went on to build a career as a scholar of history and government, with published work that included studies and teaching materials on Hispanic-American and Latin American history.

He became closely associated with the University of North Carolina, where he served as a professor, dean of the Graduate School, and at one point acting chancellor. Sources also describe him as a writer and administrator whose influence reached beyond his own classroom through university leadership and graduate education.
