A sharp-eyed humorist of the early 20th century, Chester Field Jr. turned social etiquette, courtship, and polite society into targets for witty satire. His playful observations still offer an entertaining glimpse into the conventions—and contradictions—of everyday life in the 1900s.

Chester Field Jr. is best known for The Cynic's Rules of Conduct, published by the Henry Altemus Company in 1905. The book presents a series of short, sarcastic observations about manners, marriage, romance, family life, and social behavior, using humor to poke fun at the rules of polite society.
The Henry Altemus catalog also lists How to Butt into Society and How to Make a Hit With the Girls, both published in 1906. Very little reliable biographical information about Field survives, and it is his witty, compact books rather than details of his personal life that define his literary legacy.
