Born in Nagykároly on December 12, 1811, József Gaal was a Hungarian poet, novelist, and playwright. He studied in Pest, where he formed friendships with important literary figures of his generation, and he began publishing poems while still young.
He later turned to prose and drama. His novel Szirmay Ilona is remembered as an early Hungarian historical novel, while his stage work A peleskei nótárius became his best-known success and kept his name alive with readers and theater audiences. He was also recognized by Hungary's leading literary institutions, becoming a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy.
Gaal died in Pest in 1866. Today he is remembered as a versatile writer whose work links the poetic, theatrical, and popular storytelling traditions of Hungarian Romantic-era literature.
