About the author

Born on December 12, 1811, in Nagykároly, József Gaal was a Hungarian poet, writer, and dramatist. He became a corresponding member of the Hungarian Learned Society in 1837, an early sign that his work had earned serious notice.

Gaal wrote across several forms, including poetry, fiction, and drama, and he is often associated with lively, accessible writing rather than distant literary grandeur. His reputation rests in part on comic and satirical work, with an eye for character and social detail that made his writing appealing to contemporary readers.

He died in Pest on February 26, 1866. Though not as widely known internationally today as some later Hungarian authors, he remains part of the rich literary culture of 19th-century Hungary.
