About the author

Born in Karlsruhe on February 16, 1826, Joseph Victor von Scheffel studied law at Munich, Heidelberg, and Berlin before working for a time in the Baden civil service. He eventually turned away from official life and devoted himself to writing, drawing on travel, history, and student culture for inspiration.

Scheffel became famous in the 1850s with Der Trompeter von Säckingen and the historical novel Ekkehard. His work often blended storytelling, poetry, humor, and a strong sense of the German past, which made him especially popular with 19th-century readers.

He was later ennobled, becoming Joseph Victor von Scheffel, and died in Karlsruhe on April 9, 1886. Though his reputation is more tied to literary history today than to everyday reading, he remains an important figure in German popular literature of the century.
