About the author

Born in Karlsruhe on February 16, 1826, Joseph Victor von Scheffel studied law, philology, and literature in Munich, Heidelberg, and Berlin. He began in the Baden civil service but soon turned away from government work, traveled in Italy, and committed himself to literature.

His breakthrough came with the verse romance Der Trompeter von Säckingen (1854), followed by the historical novel Ekkehard (1855). These works brought him a wide readership, and he became known for writing that blended historical settings, sentiment, wit, and an easy storytelling style.

Scheffel remained closely linked with Karlsruhe, where he died on April 9, 1886. Although tastes changed after his lifetime, he was one of the best-known German literary figures of his era, and his work still offers a lively window into 19th-century popular writing.
