About the author

Best known for The Book of the Feet: A History of Boots and Shoes (1847), Joseph Sparkes Hall wrote about footwear with the confidence of someone who knew the trade from the inside. His book ranges widely across ancient and European styles, shoemaking methods, and changing fashions, making a specialized subject feel surprisingly vivid and readable.

Hall was not only an author but also a prominent nineteenth-century shoemaker. The Victoria and Albert Museum describes him as coming from Sidmouth in Devon, training as a shoemaker, and spending much of his working life in London, where he became known as a bootmaker and as the inventor of the patented elasticated boot.

That mix of practical skill and historical curiosity gives his writing its charm. Instead of treating shoes as a small detail, Hall uses them to open a window onto design, craftsmanship, status, and daily life in the past.
