About the author

Born in Jersey City in 1879, Joseph Patrick Tumulty was a lawyer, Democratic politician, and an important voice in New Jersey’s Irish Catholic political community. After studying at Saint Peter’s College and practicing law, he served in the New Jersey General Assembly before rising to national prominence.

Tumulty is best known as Woodrow Wilson’s private secretary, a role he held from Wilson’s years as governor of New Jersey through his presidency, from 1911 to 1921. In that position he was far more than an office manager: he acted as a trusted adviser, political intermediary, and one of the administration’s most visible behind-the-scenes operators.

After leaving the White House, he returned to law and public life and later wrote about his years with Wilson. He died in 1954, but he remains a notable figure for readers interested in presidential history, party politics, and the people who shaped events just outside the spotlight.
