About the author

Born in Macclesfield, England, in 1867, Joseph McCabe entered the Franciscan order as a young man and was ordained a priest before leaving the Church. That dramatic change shaped much of his later career as a public speaker and writer.

McCabe became one of the best-known voices in British freethought. He wrote extensively on religion, philosophy, science, evolution, history, and biography, and was closely associated with rationalist and secularist circles, including the Rationalist Press Association. His books were aimed at ordinary readers, with a clear, direct style that tried to make big debates accessible.

He remained an active and controversial author for decades, publishing a huge number of books and essays before his death in 1955. Readers interested in outspoken critiques of religion, popular science writing, and the history of secular thought often find his work especially compelling.
