About the author

Born in Magdeburg, Germany, in 1810, Joseph Martin Kronheim became known as a lithographer and wood engraver who built a career across Europe before settling in Britain. He lived in Edinburgh while still a young man and later established himself in London, where he founded Kronheim & Co.

Kronheim is especially remembered for his work in color printing. He was associated with George Baxter's innovative printing methods and became one of the notable Victorian figures working to bring richer, more vivid illustration to books and prints. That background helps explain why his name appears not only in publishing history but also on charming illustrated works for children.

For readers today, his appeal lies in that blend of craftsmanship and imagination. His surviving work offers a glimpse of the 19th century at a moment when advances in printing were making illustrated books more lively, decorative, and widely enjoyed.
