About the author

Born in 1843, he was an Australian writer whose most famous book, Such Is Life (1903), was published under the pen name Tom Collins. Before gaining attention as a novelist, he spent much of his life working in rural Australia, and that firsthand experience shaped the dry humor, language, and strong sense of place in his fiction.

His writing is closely linked with the Australian bush tradition, but it also stands out for its playful style and unusual structure. What can seem at first like a simple yarn often turns into something richer: a lively portrait of working people, long journeys, and the way stories shift depending on who is telling them.

Although he died in 1912, his reputation grew over time, and he is now widely remembered as one of the distinctive voices of early Australian literature.
