About the author

Born in Victoria in 1843, he was raised in a family of Irish immigrants and was educated largely at home, especially by his mother. Before becoming known as a writer, he worked in rural and manual trades, experiences that fed directly into his sharp ear for everyday speech and his close knowledge of colonial life.

He wrote mostly under the pen name Tom Collins and is remembered above all for Such Is Life (1903), a novel that later came to be seen as an Australian classic. His work is often praised for its wit, storytelling energy, and vivid sense of place, as well as for the way it captures the character of life in the bush.

He died in Western Australia in 1912, but his reputation continued to grow after his death. Today he is widely regarded as one of the foundational voices of Australian fiction.
