About the author

Born in Seville in 1775 as José María Blanco y Crespo, he was educated for the Roman Catholic priesthood and was ordained before growing increasingly uneasy with the religious and political world around him. In 1810 he left Spain for England, where he spent the rest of his life and became known as Joseph Blanco White.

He wrote as a poet, journalist, essayist, and theologian, moving between Spanish and English intellectual life. His book Letters from Spain is especially well known for its vivid, critical picture of Spanish society, and he also became an important voice in political and religious debate during a time of upheaval in both Spain and Britain.

What makes him especially compelling today is the restless honesty of his life and work. He changed countries, languages, and religious allegiances more than once, and his writing often carries the tension of someone searching for truth even when it cost him certainty, belonging, and ease.
