About the author

Born in Valréas in 1813, Joseph-Antoine Adolphe Aubenas was a French magistrate, lawyer, and historian. Records from French reference and archival sources place him in the world of both letters and public institutions, and note that he was a member of the Société nationale des antiquaires de France.

Aubenas also held important judicial posts during his career. French historical and archival sources describe him as a counselor at the court of appeal in Martinique in 1851 and later as procureur général in Pondichéry from 1861 to 1867.

His published work ranges widely across biography, local history, and literary scholarship. Catalog and library sources list books including Histoire de l'impératrice Joséphine, Histoire de madame de Sévigné, de sa famille et de ses amis, and the substantial Histoire de Fréjus: Forum Julii, ses antiquités, son port. He died in 1893.
