About the author

Born in La Pinya in 1837 and later active in Olot, Josep Berga i Boix became one of the central figures of Catalan landscape painting. His work is closely linked to the Olot school, which he helped found, and his paintings are often noted for their connection to nature and for the influence of the Barbizon school.

He was more than a painter. Sources also describe him as a teacher and writer, and his role in artistic education in Olot helped shape a new generation of artists. In later life he was popularly known as Avi Berga, or "Grandpa Berga," a sign of the affection and respect he inspired.

Berga i Boix died in Olot in 1914, but his name remains tied to the development of modern Catalan art in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
