1868–1928
A lively Portuguese man of letters, he moved easily between law, journalism, translation, and political writing. His work ranges from sharp commentary and public debate to fiction and historical subjects, giving a vivid glimpse of Portugal at the turn of the 20th century.

by José Soares da Cunha e Costa
Born in Lisbon in 1868, Cunha e Costa was a Portuguese lawyer, writer, journalist, and translator. He built a broad literary career alongside his legal work, publishing across several genres rather than staying in just one lane.
His books include novels, essays, polemical writing, and works on political and historical themes. Records of his publications show an especially active output in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and modern digital libraries still preserve a sizable part of that bibliography.
He died in Lisbon in 1928. Today, he is remembered as a versatile public writer whose career connected literature, the press, and civic debate in Portugal.
