About the author

Born in Vila-real in 1853 and later active in Valencia, José Nebot Pérez trained in pharmacy but built a wider life in letters and scholarship. Sources describe him as a pharmacist by education, a librarian or archivist by profession, and an intellectual closely linked to Valencian cultural life.

He studied in Valencia and Barcelona, later earning a doctorate in pharmacy in Madrid, and worked for years as a pharmacist in his hometown before joining the corps of archivists, librarians, and archaeologists. He was associated with the University of Valencia library and also contributed to periodicals such as Revista de Castellón and Correo de Valencia.

Nebot Pérez is especially remembered for his work on Valencian language and orthography. He is described as one of the early Valencian grammarians connected to the Renaixença, and works such as Apuntes para una gramática valenciana popular and Tratado de ortografía valenciana clásica show his effort to study, regularize, and defend Valencian writing. He died in Valencia in 1914.
