About the author

Born in Honda, Colombia, on March 31, 1828, José María Samper was a Colombian lawyer, politician, journalist, and writer whose career stretched across public life and many literary genres. Reliable sources describe him as an unusually versatile author, publishing poetry, drama, comedy, novels, didactic works, biographies, travel books, and critical and historical essays.

He was active in the press as well, collaborating with periodicals of his time, founding La Revista Americana, and working as a managing editor. That mix of journalism and public debate helped shape a body of writing closely tied to the political and intellectual life of 19th-century Colombia.

Samper died on July 22, 1888, in Anapoima. He is remembered as a broad-ranging man of letters whose work connected literature with history, criticism, and civic life.
