About the author

José Maria Delorme Colaço (1815–1863) was a Portuguese author whose name survives most clearly through Galleria dos Vice-reis e Governadores da India Portugueza, published in Lisbon in 1841. The book is a historical and biographical survey of the men who governed Portuguese India, and modern library and ebook records still identify it as his principal work.

The project shows a strong interest in history, public memory, and imperial biography. Rather than writing fiction, he appears to have focused on documentary and historical material, presenting notable colonial figures for a Portuguese readership of the early nineteenth century.

A military archive record also links his name to an 1853 list concerning infantry officers, which suggests he may have been involved with official or administrative work in addition to authorship. Clear biographical details beyond his dates and surviving records are limited, so much of his life remains only lightly documented.
